Around the Inn

Broughton-in-Furness is the gateway to the southwest fells of Lakeland, the ruggedly picturesque Duddon Valley.  The quiet fells, cut by exhilarating passes, reveal magnificent views into the Sca Fell and Coniston ranges and northwards on to the heart of the Lake District, with the sweeping vista of Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea coast to the south and west.  This is the only place in the Lake District where the mighty fells stretch down to the sea, giving way to long, golden, sandy beaches along their fringe.

The natural beauty of the landscape has survived the ravages of it’s industrial past and enfolds the relics of the former mining, iron-making and textile activities into its overwhelming and awe inspiring presence.  What remains are scattered buildings, folds and lonnings, now making interesting diversions on a day’s exploration.

The independent nature of the community of southwest Cumbria has ensured that the towns and villages have not been swallowed up by large corporate concerns but retain an individual character.  Agriculture still dominates the local economy, mainly hill or marshland farms. This provides a constant supply of top quality produce to local shops and restaurants alike.

Broughton-in-Furness survives as an unspoiled, small, market town with a vibrant social and commercial  life. The town and it’s surroundings  offer all that is needed to service body and soul in a simple, unfussy, relaxed way.

Nearby Foxfield houses the Prince of Wales, a pub for the true beer connoiseur.
